Bette McAnay

Bette M. McAnany, 92, of Butler passed away Friday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

She was born on Oct. 26, 1921, in Warren, Ohio, to the late Hugh Smith and Jesselyn (Watkins) Smith.

Bette was a member of the North Main Street Church of God. She attended Butler Elementary School, Evans City High School and graduated from Westminster College.

After graduating from college, Bette worked at ARMCO and in 1954 she was secretary to the Honorable Clyde Shoemaker. In 1971, she was appointed Butler County's first court administrator and served in that capacity until retiring in 1995, after 41 years. She was highly regarded by the judges, attorneys and peers for her indisputable professionalism.

Bette was always an avid reader, reading three newspapers on weekends and the latest book releases. When macular degeneration stole her vision, she adapted her craving for up to date news by turning on Channel 4.

Mrs. McAnany is survived by her sister, Joyce Ann Wigton and her husband, James, of Butler, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack) McAnany, who she married on Oct. 18, 1946, and who passed away on July 4, 1982, and two brothers, Stanley Hugh and Bill Archibald Smith.

McAnany — At the request of Bette M. McAnany, who passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, there will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.The family would like to thank all Bette's caregivers who were so compassionate and lovingly cared for her, especially through her last few weeks.
