Diana Lynn Hoenig, 58, of Portersville, Scott Township, Lawrence County, passed away at 1:40 p.m. Friday at her home.

She was born in Butler on June 17, 1955, to Edward L. Hoenig and Ruth Genevieve Reichert Hoenig.

She received her undergraduate degree from Slippery Rock University and went on to become a teacher in New Jersey. She later received her master's degree in computer science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and loved her work at Bell Labs until her early retirement in 2002 when she returned home to lovingly care for her mother until her mother's passing.

She had actively enjoyed participating in organizing programs for young daughters of fellow colleagues, was a voracious reader and had a deep love of learning. She made provisions to establish a scholarship fund for young women attending the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She loved her farm, life on the farm and caring for her cats and many strays. She was a genuine person, a formidable thinker and had unswerving devotion to her mother.

Survivors include two brothers, John and his wife, Allison Hoenig, of Austin, Texas, and George Hoenig of California, and a number of nieces and nephews, Jessica and her husband, Brandon Rains, Leslie Hoenig, Christopher Hoenig and Rachael Hoenig.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Hoenig — The friends of Diana Lynn Hoenig, who passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, will be received at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Tuesday.The funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Thomas Meling, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church, presiding. Interment will be in Zion Baptist Cemetery; Worth Township, Butler County.The memorial contributions may be given to your favorite charity or to the Zion Baptist Church.
