BRUIN — Ben Bryant of Butler rolled a 700-series to win the scratch division of the recent Butler County Bowling Association's men's singles tournament at Bruin Lanes.

Skip Weyand of Butler rolled a 685 to finish second, followed by Don Clark of West Sunbury with a 640.

Jim Gerginski of Harmony won the handicap division. Bryant was second, followed by Stephen Birckbichler of Chicora, Steve Martin of Mars, James Kile of Renfrew and George Conditto of Prospect.

BUFFALO TWP — Lernerville Speedway general manager Gary Risch Jr. was recently named 2013 Promoter of the Year during the World Racing Group's “Night of Champions” Awards Banquet in Charlotte, N.C.Risch received the award for his role in the growth of Lernerville's annual Firecracker 100 Late Model race. He has also been an integral part of the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park, Super DIRT Week in New York and the World Finals in Charlotte.

CLARION — Top-seeded Clarion (31-4) dropped a 3-1 decision to fourth-seeded Gannon in the PSAC women's volleyball quarterfinals recently.Freeport graduate Carlie Bieranowski had 11 kills and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles in the loss. Clarion still hopes to receive its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament bid.

GREENSBURG — Slippery Rock High graduate and Grove City College junior Brian Giesler scored 17 points — including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:08 to play — as the Wolveries' basketball team defeated Pitt-Greensburg, 80-75, Wednesday night.Mitch Marmelstein scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Grove City (2-1).

NEW YORK — Perennial All-Pro linebacker Derrick Brooks and wide receiver Marvin Harrison were among 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's class of 2014.Brooks and Harrison, along with tackle Walter Jones and coach Tony Dungy, were the first-year eligible candidates to make the cut from 126 to 25.Other star players being considered for induction to the Canton, Ohio, shrine next August include kicker Morten Andersen, running back Jerome Bettis, defensive end-linebacker Charles Haley, safety John Lynch and defensive end Michael Strahan.

PARK CITY, Utah — Lindsey Vonn partially tore one of the reconstructed ligaments in her surgically repaired right knee in a training crash that at the very least puts her preparation for the Sochi Olympics on hold.What is less clear at the moment: When the four-time overall World Cup champion and 2010 Vancouver downhill gold medalist will be able to compete again and how her injuries might affect her Olympic hopes.
