NEW CASTLE — State police are trying to find whoever fatally shot a woman as she got into her vehicle after finishing up her shift at a Western Pennsylvania Walmart.
Troopers say the dead woman is 22-year-old Mariah Anderson of New Castle.
She worked at the discount store in neighboring Union Township and was shot as she got into her sport-utility vehicle about 11:15 p.m. Sunday.
Police say at least five shots were fired into the vehicle and that Anderson was shot in the face.
A Pennsylvania pastor charged under United Methodist law with officiating his son's same-sex marriage is scheduled to go on trial today.The Rev. Frank Schaefer could be defrocked if a jury comprised of fellow Methodist clergy convicts him of breaking his pastoral vows by officiating the 2007 ceremony in Massachusetts.The nation's largest mainline Protestant denomination accepts gay and lesbian members, but rejects the practice of homosexuality as “incompatible with Christian teaching.”The issue has split the church. Hundreds of Methodist ministers have publicly rejected church doctrine on homosexuality, and some of them face discipline for presiding over same-sex unions.Schaefer's trial will take place today at a Methodist retreat in Spring City.
UNIONTOWN — A southwest Pennsylvania man has been charged with criminal homicide in the death of a toddler who suffered severe internal injuries.Pennsylvania State Police say 30-year-old Domer Wade Burkholder Jr. of Uniontown struck the 20-month-old girl in her abdomen on Thursday evening. He was charged Friday and was awaiting arraignment.Authorities were notified of the injured child by Uniontown Hospital, where she was being treated Friday.
STATE COLLEGE — A Penn State University student is dead after he fell from the ninth floor balcony of an apartment building.State police said 20-year-old Conor Macmannis was pronounced dead at the scene early Saturday. The fall occurred at 3:43 a.m. at the Penn Towers building on Beaver Avenue.Police say a preliminary investigation indicates drugs and alcohol apparently were factors in the fall.
PHILADELPHIA — Authorities say a 1-year-old girl was struck by a subway train in Philadelphia and is in the hospital with significant head injuries.Transit officials say a man holding the child was standing too close to the edge of the platform just outside of downtown Philadelphia as the train approached around 8 p.m. Friday.Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority spokesman Andrew Busch says the girl was struck in the head and rushed to Children's Hospital.
