Mary M. Duffer, 96, of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Butler, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at the Brandywine Nursing Home in Wilmington, Del.

She was born on July 1, 1917, in Butler to the late Andrew Duffer and Susan (Vasil) Duffer.

Miss Duffer was a graduate of Butler High School, then went onto earn her undergraduate degree at Slippery Rock State College and her master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh. She taught at Slippery Rock State College, Pittsburgh area schools and Emily Brittain School in Butler, retiring in 1977.

Mary was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Slippery Rock alumni and the Pitt alumni. She was an avid reader, liked to take long walks in Butler and enjoyed her trips with her niece, Michele, to Atlantic City. She loved all of Michele’s pets. She was an avid Pirates and Steelers fan.

Miss Duffer is survived by her niece, Michele Minto and her husband, Larry, of Wilmington, Del., with who she made her home with.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Anne Russin.

DUFFER — The friends of Mary M. Duffer, who passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St. Butler. Burial will take place in the Calvary Cemetery.

St. Paul Catholic Women and Christian Mothers will meet at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday at the church to recite the rosary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Butler Humane Society, 1015 Evans City Road, Renfrew, PA 16053.
