SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University quarterback Nigel Barksdale and linebacker Quindell Dean have been named Beyond Sports Network's Division II Athletes of the Week.Barksdale threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 125 yards and a score in SRU's 35-17 win over California (Pa.) last weekend. Dean had a career-high 16 tackles — three for loss — and batted down two passes in the win.
Butler graduate and St. Bonaventure freshman Matt Goettler was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after his performance in a recent Bonnies' swim meet.Goettler won the 100-yard breaststroke, finished second in the 200-yard breast and was a member of the team's winning 200-yard medley relay.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers' franchise quarterback is taking a seat.Aaron Rodgers said Tuesday he has a fractured left collarbone and has no idea yet how long he will be out.The 2011 NFL MVP offered details of the injury on his weekly radio show on 540-AM ESPN. He got hurt after getting sacked by the Bears' Shea McClellin on a third-down play during the Packers' first series while he was scrambling outside the pocket. He hurt his left, non-throwing shoulder.“I do have a fractured collarbone. That's a significant injury,” Rodgers said. “We'll know more about the severity and the timetable later this week.”Rodgers said he was holding out hope he would heal quickly. “In this case, it was considerably more pain than I've felt in a long time,” he added.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos placed guard John Moffitt on the reserve/left squad list after he told the team he was quitting the NFL.Moffitt, a third-year pro from Wisconsin, didn't return from the team's bye week Monday. On Tuesday, he told 102.3 ESPN in Denver that he'd lost his love for the game and didn't want to keep playing just for a paycheck.Moffitt also told the radio station he was thinking about his long-term health, saying, “scientists do know that hits to the head do deteriorate your brain,” and that wasn't a risk he was willing to take any longer.“I still love football,” Moffitt said. “I just don't love doing it.”
DENVER — Colorado Rockies co-owner Charlie Monfort was arrested late Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence.Monfort was arrested in Windsor, about 60 miles north of Denver. Police Sgt. Gerald Beers said he had no details.
