Ethel Bridenbaugh

Ethel McClain Bridenbaugh, 100, of Leonardtown, Md., formerly of McKean Street and Alameda Road, Butler, passed away Thursday at the Hospice House of St. Mary's, Callaway, Md.

Born Dec. 27, 1912, in Saxton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry Ellsworth McClain and Myrtle Mae (Kline) McClain.

Ethel had two loves in her life, her family and nursing.

She married her husband, W. Howard Bridenbaugh, on Nov. 11, 1940. They had 34 wonderful years together until his death Oct. 18, 1974.

She worked as a private duty nurse in Pennsylvania and Florida before her marriage. After raising her children, she worked for 20 years as a nurse at Butler Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Following her retirement from nursing, she enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States for 20 years. In 2004, Ethel moved to Cedar Lane Senior Living Community in Leonardtown, Md., to be close to her daughter and her family. She made many friends at Cedar Lane, where she enjoyed playing bridge in several daytime bridge groups and playing cards with her Cedar Lane friends in the evenings. She played bridge twice a week until six weeks before her death. She also enjoyed the weekly crochet group that met at her daughter's home.

Ethel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Tom Stevens of Hollywood, Md.; her daughter-in-law, Margaret Bridenbaugh of San Antonio, Texas; her grandchildren, William H. Bridenbaugh III of St. Louis, Mo., Gregory T. Stevens and his wife, Amy, of Germantown, Md., Catherine E. Pierce and her husband, Michael, of California, Md.; and her six great-grandchildren, Foster Pierce, Renna Pierce, Adam Pierce, Ryan Pierce, Siena Stevens and Sarah Stevens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Howard Bridenbaugh; her son, William H. Bridenbaugh II; her brother, Harry McClain, and her parents, Harry and Myrtle McClain.

Bridenbaugh — A private interment for Ethel McClain Bridenbaugh, who passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, was in Crawford Memorial Cemetery, Emlenton, Pa.Arrangements are being handled by Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E.
