Corbett pushes for transportation funding

HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett is renewing his appeal for a compromise on stalled legislation to ramp up transportation funding as he tries to set a positive tone for the two weeks before lawmakers next return to Harrisburg.

Corbett told reporters this morning that improving the state’s roads, bridges and mass transit services isn’t about personal convenience, but about safety, quality of life and economic competitiveness.

He’s also warning that, without passage, the state’s money for road and bridge construction projects is shrinking and that would mean workers losing jobs and a growing backlog of needed repairs.

Legislators are considering increasing transportation spending by more than $2 billion a year, or almost 50 percent of the state’s spending on transportation systems. The state’s fuel tax rates would be among the nation’s highest.
