KARNS CITY — The Karns City boys and girls soccer teams will host District 9 Class A playoff games at Diehl Stadium Wednesday.
The Gremlins' girls soccer team, 17-0 and the No. 1 seed, will host either Port Alleghany or Clarion at 5 p.m.
The Karns City boys soccer team, 12-2 and also the No. 1 seed will play either DuBois Central Catholic or Redbank Valley at 7 p.m.
NEW YORK — Alabama and Florida State hold the top two spots in the first BCS standings of the season. Oregon was a close third behind second-place Florida State.The Seminoles (.9348 BCS average) are coming off their biggest win of the season, a 51-14 victory at previously unbeaten Clemson.The Ducks (.9320) have only played one team that was ranked at the time, but could get a boost in the next two weeks with games against UCLA and at Stanford.Ohio State is a more distant fourth, followed by Missouri.
NEW YORK — Florida State, Baylor and Missouri took big steps forward as The Associated Press college football poll got extensive makeover following losses by five top-10 teams.Alabama is still No. 1, Oregon still two and Ohio State fourth, but otherwise there was much movement.Florida State moved up two spots to No. 3 after its big win at Clemson, which fell from third to No. 9.Missouri went from 14 to fifth, its best ranking since 2008. No. 6 Baylor jumped to its highest ranking since 1980. Miami is No. 7, followed by Stanford, and Texas Tech is No. 10.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced that it is working with Grambling officials to “ensure that the appropriate actions are made” to resolve the continuing standoff between the school's football players and administration.The SWAC said in a release that Grambling had not been fined for forfeiting its scheduled game Saturday at Jackson State. As part of a boycott, Grambling players refused to travel from their Louisiana campus because of issues with athletic department and university leaders.SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp told the Associated Press on Friday that Grambling would be subject to a fine for forfeiting according to the league's bylaws.Grambling's next scheduled game is Saturday at home against Texas Southern.
LAS VEGAS — Webb Simpson got the fast start he has looking for — in the final round at TPC Summerlin and in the PGA Tour's new wraparound season.Simpson birdied two of the first three holes, pulling away for a six-stroke win in the second event of the season.Winning for the first time since the 2012 U.S. Open, Simpson closed with a 5-under 66 in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He finished at 24-under 260 after opening with rounds of 64, 63 and 67.
