Rock harriers win SRU Invite
Both the Slippery Rock University men’s and women’s cross country teams won the SRU Invitational, held Saturday at Cooper’s Lake.
The Rock men finished with 16 points, 35 better than runner-up Robert Morris, a Division I program.
SRU earned the top four spots, led by Morgan Elliott, who won the individual title by covering the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes and 37 seconds.
Alex Koksal, Michael Beegle and Slippery Rock High School graduate Ryan Thompson placed second, third and fourth overall, respectively.
SRU’s women put four runners into the top 10, tallying 36 points and, like the men, beat Robert Morris (58) for the top spot.
Sarah Wirth turned in a second-place time of 24:13.
Jenny Picot (fourth place), Janine Powis (seventh) and Sara Miller (ninth) also turned in strong efforts.
Women’s VolleyballCaroline Houston had 17 kills and 15 digs, but The Rock (9-13, 4-5) dropped a 3-1 decision to California (Pa.) by scores of 16-25, 22-25, 26-24 and 17-25.
Women’s SoccerNicole Krueger scored on a first-half penalty kick and Leslie Henny followed with an unassisted tally in the second half as No. 24 SRU defeated host Lock Haven 2-0.Goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman made three saves for The Rock (8-2-1, 7-2-1).
FootballWaynesburg University’s football team outgained Grove City 444-266 as the Yellow Jackets crushed the Wolverines 38-0 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action Saturday at Robert E. Thorn Field.Waynesburg quarterback Carter Hill threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns.GCC was hampered by three turnovers and managed just 54 rushing yards on 36 attempts.Quarterback Brian Pell completed 23 of 44 passes for 212 yards and an interception.The Wolverines (3-3, 1-3) return to action Oct. 26 at Thomas More.
