Dishing out some awards
Since I am terrible at math, I let the halfway mark of the fall sports season pass without handing out my Mid-season Awards.
Oops.
So, here are my 66.7-Percent-Season Awards (catchy, isn’t it?)
The “Catch me if You Can” Award: Ryan Lauster, Slippery Rock football — He can break off a 30-yard run and his yards-per-carry average would go down.
Calling the stats Lauster has put up this season gaudy doesn’t even begin to cover it.
The sophomore has Road Runnered his way to 424 yards on just 12 carries.
That’s 35.3 yards every time he touches the football.
Beep! Beep!
The “More Kills Than in a Rambo Movie” Award: Celina Sanks, Knoch volleyball — There was little doubt this Eastern Kentucky recruit was a dangerous weapon for the Knights, but Sanks went nuclear against Freeport in a five-game win over the Yellowjackets last week with a staggering 33 kills.
Sanks is averaging more than 15 kills per match this season for Knoch.
The “Gritty Is As Gritty Does” Award: The Freeport football team — Coming into their game against Burrell last week, the Yellowjackets were 1-4, hadn’t scored a point in the first half and were heading nowhere.
Then, Freeport fell behind the Bucs 10-0 in the first quarter.
Funny thing happened, though. The Yellowjackets rallied for a 12-10 win — and actually scored a first-half touchdown — and now, suddenly, all perception has changed.
They have a winnable game this week against East Allegheny and another in Week 9 against Summit Academy. Those two wins could put Freeport into the playoffs.
The “Best Case for a Mercy Rule in Soccer” Award: The Karns City girls soccer team — The Gremlins are 14-0 and have outscored their opponents by more than 100 goals this season.
Six of their wins have come by nine or more goals.
And this isn’t a case of Karns City running up the score. It’s a perfect storm of the Gremlins being A) really, really good and B) KSAC girls soccer teams being, generally, really, really out-matched and C) an inexplicable lack of a mercy rule in soccer.
There’s a 10-run rule in baseball. A 40-point rule in basketball. A 35-point rule in football. Even lacrosse has a 12-goal mercy rule.
Soccer desperately needs a mercy rule.
The “Wise Before Their Time” Award: The Karns City boys soccer team — Few thought the Gremlins would get off to an 8-1 start this season after losing 10 seniors to graduation and long-time coach Roy Parker to graduation.
But first-year coach Jim Grenninger and a trio of first-year players in freshmen Spencer Myers, Noah Pollock and Jace Ebbitt have Karns City in position to win its 10th consecutive KSAC title.
