KUTZTOWN — In its fifth game, Slippery Rock University’s football team found what it’s been looking for.

“We put a complete game together,” Rock coach George Mihalik said of his team’s 58-10 triumph at Kutztown Saturday afternoon. “Offense, defense, special teams ... Every phase played a solid game.

“We took control of this game from the outset.”

And it was scary.

SRU (4-1, 1-1) amassed 429 yards of offense in the first half — 611 for the day — and had a 45-3 lead at intermission. None of SRU’s scoring drives took as long as two minutes.

Nigel Barksdale threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns — and was pulled after the first possession of the second half. Jaimire Dutrieuille had five receptions for 171 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring plays covering 64 and 75 yards in the second quarter.

The Rock had a 58-3 lead with 10:24 left in the third quarter, Zack Newsock’s 33-yard touchdown pass to John Schademan producing the team’s final scoring play.

“This was Jaimire’s day today,” Mihalik said. “We have a number of guys capable of producing numbers like that. You never know who it’s going to be. That’s the nice thing about this offense.”

After intercepting three passes in its first four games, The Rock defense picked off five passes Saturday. Mars graduate Austin Miele returned his theft 22 yards for a touchdown during SRU’s 31-point second quarter.

Admire Carter, Mike Grata, Derek Morgan and Gary Allen also intercepted passes. Carter returned his for a touchdown, but an illegal block penalty wiped out the score.

“Our defensive front four was getting pressure on the quarterback all day,” Mihalik said. “We had three sacks, but we were hitting the quarterback with regularity.”

Kutztown freshman quarterback Alec Werner completed only 14 of 39 passes for 181 yards. His favorite target, Alex Tonnies, entered the game leading all of Division II with 47 catches on the year. He managed just two catches for 19 yards.

The Golden Bears (0-5) netted only five yards rushing for the day.

“I feel like our defense is settling in and coming into its own,” Mihalik said.

SRU scored more than 50 points for the fourth time in five games, doing so for the first time in school history. The Rock’s 252 points scored in its first five games mark a school record as well.

SRU returns home Saturday to host unbeaten Indiana (Pa.) in a 2 p.m. kickoff at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
