PITTSBURGH — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is closing all campsites and recreational parks in the Pittsburgh District because of the government shutdown. The area includes sites in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Corps says in a Tuesday afternoon release that all current campers must depart no later than 8 p.m. on Oct. 2. They will receive a refund of any unused portion of their reservations.

The Corps manages 16 lakes and about 104,000 acres of public land around the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers. The largest campground is at Berlin Lake in Ohio, with 347 campsites.

The sites are popular with boaters, campers and picnickers, and for hunting and fishing.

Until further notice the recreation sites won’t be accepting new reservations.

KKK rally canceled by federal shutdownGETTYSBURG — A planned Ku Klux Klan rally at Gettysburg National Military Park is canceled because of the federal government’s shutdown.Park officials said they rescinded all permits for special events because of the shutdown that began Tuesday.The permit had been approved for a Maryland-based KKK group, the Confederate White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, for a Saturday gathering.

Motive in shooting outburst unknownASHVILLE — Relatives of a Pennsylvania woman who shot her own mother with a 12-gauge shotgun are still struggling to understand what led to the violent outburst that ultimately left four family members dead.Roberta Frew’s sisters say there was a history of ill-will in the family over a grandmother that Josephine Ruckinger took custody of, but that still doesn’t explain the violence.Ruckinger shot Frew, her mother, with the shotgun on Sept. 27 in what authorities call a home invasion. Ruckinger’s husband, Jeffrey, also killed John Frew Jr., Josephine’s brother.The father of the family, John Frew, returned fire and killed both Josephine and Jeffrey. Police are still investigating, but they say it appears he was a victim and won’t be charged.
