CENTER TWP — Butler County’s only drive-in theater is looking for a little support.

Clint DeMarsh, vice president of Epic Theaters in Florida, said the family-owned Pioneer Theater could win a digital projector from Honda if enough people text 120 to 444999.

That projector, if won, would secure the theater’s hope to reopen next spring. The theater showed it’s final movie of the year on Sunday.

Filmmakers worldwide are making the switch to digital only productions, leaving theaters like the Pioneer, which only open part of the year because it’s a drive-in, in a pinch to afford the change.

The Pioneer Theater, built in 1958 by DeMarsh’s parents, uses 35 millimeter film and cannot afford the $350,000 needed to make the complete switch to digital projectors for its five screens, DeMarsh said.

If it would get a digital projector, the theater would show a mix of digital and 35 mm movies.

DeMarsh said he’s hopes county will support the theater and vote by text or visiting Projectdrivein.com. The contest ends Saturday.

If the theater does not win a projector, DeMarsh said the owners will look at several options: getting financing to buy a projector, closing the theater or selling it.
