GC gets football shutout Saturday
Grove City College’s defense recorded seven sacks and held host Anderson (Ind.) to just 46 yards rushing on 23 attempts as the Wolverines’ football team improved to 2-0 with a 42-0 shutout Saturday afternoon.
Senior quarterback Brian Pell led GCC’s offense by completing 16 of 21 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns while running back Steve Maskrey rushed 18 times for 82 yards and two more scores.
The Wolverines, who managed a 21-point second period, received interceptions from defensive backs Joe Diani and Slater Simek.
Grove City will open play in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference next Saturday when it hosts Washington & Jefferson with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Women’s Field HockeyGina Smarrelli scored Slippery Rock University’s lone goal off a pass from Lindsay Brown in The Rock’s 2-1 loss to visiting Kutztown.SRU goalkeepers Courtney Lee and Carlee DuMars combined to make four saves as their team fell to 2-2 on the season.
Women’s TennisSRU’s doubles duo of Nina Grbac and Sarah Joumond fell in the semifinal round of the PSAC Championships on Sunday at Bloomsburg University.Grbac and Joumond defeated Shippensburg’s Julia Saintz and Brittnee Buckley 8-0 and downed Indiana (Pa.) University’s tandem of Erika Schnass and Alanna McFail 8-5 in the quarterfinals.In the semis, The Rock team’s run ended with a 9-8 loss to the top-seeded team from California (Pa.) University, Lucie Rey and Lucie Sipkova.
