Construction on the new downtown Rite Aid is to begin in November.

The city planning and zoning commission had a courtesy review meeting on Wednesday for the developers of the Centre City project to present their plans of the store.

Paul Dunn, the lead developer with JS Capitol Construction, said they hope to break ground on the pharmacy in November, a month after a proposed groundbreaking on the streets and infrastructure at the site of the downtown project.

Dunn said construction of the Rite Aid will begin first, with construction of the Centre City’s hotel and parking garage to be later.

The 14,500 square foot pharmacy is scheduled to open in July next year if construction begins in November. The building will be twice as big as the current Rite Aid that is a few blocks away from the Centre City location.

Art Cordwell, the director of the city redevelopment authority, said the owner of the building that Rite Aid currently leases is in talks to find a replacement tenant.

The new pharmacy will have a brown brick exterior and a marquis style sign to fit in with the historic style of downtown Butler.

It also will have a two-lane drive through pharmacy and 36 parking spaces.

The store is expected to employ about 20 to 25 full and part-time workers, a slight increase over the current location, according to developers.

The pharmacy will serve as the retail section of the $10 million Centre City project, which will bring a 75-room Marriott Springhill Suites hotel and a three-tier parking garage to the city.
