Edith Lucas

Edith Phyllis (Haynes) Lucas, 87, of Evans City and Hobe Sound, Fla., passed away Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Barking, Essex, England, the daughter of the late Frank B. and Nellie (Sellen) Haynes.

Edith started working at the age of 14 in England, and she joined the Women’s Land Army in 1944, and worked in support of the World War II effort, until moving to the United States in 1946 as a war bride.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother for her entire life. She was a member of the Daughters of the British Empire, the Associated Artists of Butler County and the Lion’s Club Auxiliary. In Florida, she and her husband have been members of the Ridgeway Theater Group from 1993 until present and also sang in Ridgeway Chorus for a number of years.

Edith enjoyed gardening, painting, music, reading and spending time with her family. She also loved the outdoors, especially the ocean and Moraine State Park. Edith was a member of the Anglican Church of England (Episcopal).

Surviving are her husband, William James Lucas, who she married Dec. 22, 1945; a daughter, Carol Anne (Paul) Means of Butler; a son, William Vincent (Patricia) Lucas of Tallahassee, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Sean Lucas, Stacy Tramel, Timothy Lucas, Christopher Steiner, Stephen Steiner, Richard Conner, Alexander Means and Jennifer Lucas; six great -grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Frank Philip Lucas; a daughter, Edna Jean Conner; three sisters, Florrie, Audrey and Edna, and a brother, Frank.

LUCAS — Friends of Edith Phyllis (Haynes) Lucas, who passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, will be received at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Prospect.In memory of her children, Frank and Edna, contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 E.
