CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry Cinemas in the Cranberry Mall on Freedom Road may expand.

The township planning advisory commission reviewed plans this week submitted by Gumberg Associates to expand the theater by 6,071 square feet.

The current space is 26,000 square feet.

Preliminary plans show the expansion taking up the space occupied a Subway Restaurant, which has moved to another area of the mall.

In addition, space will be added to the front of the building. The added space will make room for three more screens in the cinema, according to township officials.

The planning advisory commission is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to approve the expansion.

Intermediate Unit staff donates foodGROVE CITY — Last week Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV staff members delivered nearly 1,300 food items and $150 to charities in the area, including one in Butler County.The Lighthouse Foundation in Middlesex Township received 427 food items and $50.Additionally, a delivery of 415 food items and $50 was made to the City Rescue Mission in Lawrence County and a delivery of 432 food items and $50 was made to Prince of Peace in Mercer County.This was part of the MIU IV’s first ever Pack the Van Back to School Food Drive.The subcommittee that organized the drive plans to make it an annual event.

U.S. economy grew at 2.5% rate in springWASHINGTON — The U.S. economy grew at a 2.5 percent annual rate from April through June, much faster than previously estimated. The steep revision was largely because U.S. companies exported more goods and imports declined.The Commerce Department said second-quarter growth was sharply higher than the initial 1.7 percent rate it reported last month. And the growth this spring was more than double the 1.1 percent rate from January through March.The improvement in the trade deficit helped offset weaker government spending.Economists expect growth will stay at an annual rate of around 2.5 percent in the second half of the year, helped by steady job gains and less drag from federal spending cuts. Still, some say higher interest rates might restrain the economy’s expansion in the second half.
