William H. 'Bill' Broad

William H. “Bill” Broad, 87, of East Brewster Road, Butler, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 5:10 p.m. Saturday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

He was born Jan. 20, 1926, in Claytonia, Pa., to the late William Thomas Broad and Bessie Amanda (Lingerman) Broad.

Mr. Broad was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European and African Middle East Campaign during World War II.

He worked at Pullman Standard until his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Broad was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class. Bill was known as the “candy man” and enjoyed gardening, raising and training beagles and giving to those less fortunate. He loved spending time with his family, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Broad is survived by two daughters, Janice Petsinger of Butler and Cindy Oesterling and her husband, Ray, of Butler; one son, Samuel Broad and his wife, Debbie, of Butler; six grandchildren, Aaron Petsinger and his wife, Kiersten, Eric Oesterling and his wife, Ann, Ginger Gall and her husband, Andy, Amanda Vaughan and her husband, Greg, Darcie Marshall and her husband, Pastor Phil, and Joel Broad; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Patricia Broad of Butler; and two nieces and two nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend for 66 years, Della Mae (Moser) Broad, who he married Feb. 16, 1946, and who passed away May 7, 2012; his son-in-law, Bill Petsinger; one brother, John Ralph Broad; and two nephews, John Lynwood Broad and Thomas Eric Broad.

BROAD — Friends of William H. “Bill” Broad, who passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor David Maitland and Pastor Todd Wentworth of the First Baptist Church and Pastor Phil Marshall, associate pastor at the First Baptist Church, Altoona, Pa., officiating.Officers and members of the American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora and the VFW Post 249 will conduct military services at the funeral home following the funeral service.
