Hugh Atkins
Hugh Atkins, 83, a resident of Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople, formerly of Cheswick, passed away Sunday.
Born Oct. 17, 1929, in Gainesville, Ga., he was the son of the late Lawrence and Nona (Miller) Atkins.
Mr. Atkins proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
After 26 years of dedication, he retired as an art teacher from the Allegheny Valley School District in Springdale. During his free time, he enjoyed crafts and art. For 20 years, Mr. Atkins faithfully volunteered at the Harmarville Rehabilitation Center.
He is survived by his six nieces and nephews, Warren Mathe and his wife, Anne, Christine Tyson, Marsha Mathe, Jacalyn Bayer and her husband, Edwin, Scottie Spry and Tom Atkins; his brother-in-law, John Mathe and his wife, Gerry, and his sister-in-law, Veronica Mathe.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Mathe) Atkins, who passed away on Nov. 18, 2009; his three brothers, Lawrence, Norman and Tom Atkins and his sister-in-law, Anna Mae Mathe.
ATKINS — A memorial service for Hugh Atkins, who passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Seaman Memorial Chapel at Passavant Retirement Community, 401 S. Main St., Zelienople, with the Rev. John J. Hoogerbrugge, officiating.He will be laid to rest at Deer Creek Cemetery in Cheswick.Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Boylan Funeral Home, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor in support of the Zelienople Area Public Library, 227 S.
