CMS Ret. James Grant Irwin, 78, of Texas passed away Wednesday after a brief illness.

He was born in Fenelton, on Dec. 23, 1934.

On Feb. 8, 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, retiring on July 31, 1985.

While stationed in England, he met and married his wife, Janice. They wed June 22, 1957.

After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for nine years at the Texas State Bar Examiners office.

Jim lived his life to the fullest, loved the Air Force, his family and bowling with the senior league at Westgate Lanes. He was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan. He will be sorely missed as the world has lost a great man. Thanks to Dr. Steven Dobberfuhl, the doctors and staff at the South Austin Medical Center and West Oaks and New Century hospices.

Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice; son, James Jr. and wife, Kelly; daughters, Melanie, Karen (Mike) and Susan (Daniel); grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jennifer, James, Matthew, Karina, Emily, Hannah, Chelsea, Hayden, Mary and Stella; great-grandchildren, Alex, Christopher, Alchemy, Cayden, Savannah, Owen, Jacob, Paige, Ryan and Ross; sisters, Madelyn Shaner of Vero Beach, Fla., Margaret and her husband, James, Colligan of East Brady, and Linda Barnes of Wagonner, Okla.; and brother-in-law, Maurice Hobbs of Fleetwood, England. Sister-in-law, Carolyn Irwin of East Brady, and numerous nieces and nephews, both in the USA and England, also survive.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Warren W. Sr. and Mary Belle Irwin; brother, Warren W. Jr.; twin brother, David B. Irwin; sisters, Evelyn Golec, Isabel Shook, Patricia Cornetti; in-laws, Richard and Karma Gunn; and sister-in-law, Susan Hobbs.

IRWIN — Funeral services for CMS Ret. James Grant Irwin, 78, of Texas, who passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trl, Austin, Texas, followed by military burial at 1:45 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery, San Antonio.
