WASHINGTON, Pa. — Three men have been jailed on charges they killed a college running back while mugging him for his wallet and smart phone as he walked back to the Washington & Jefferson College campus from a bar.

They are charged in the Oct. 4 death of 21-year-old Timothy McNerney, who was a 2009 Knoch High School graduate.

Police say he died of a head injury when he was either struck or fell and hit his head during the incident about 2:30 a.m. that day.

Tuesday night Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone announced the arrests of Eric Wells, 24, of Penn Hills, Troy Simmons, 23, of East Pittsburgh, and Adam Hankins, 23, of Washington, Pa.

The suspects weren’t students at Washington & Jefferson.

McNerney was a senior business major and starting running back at Washington & Jefferson.

A standout on the gridiron for Knoch, he was the son of Bob and Denise McNerney and the brother of Patrick McNerney.

More than 300 people attend his funeral at Holy Sepulcher Catholic Church.
