City revenues improve in first half of year

The city's tax revenues through the first half of 2013 are 4 percent higher than they were at the same time last year.

That increase comes in part from a strong month for earned income tax and business privilege tax collections, said Jeff Smith, city treasurer.

The city collected more than $691,000 in business privilege taxes in June alone, more than all other months this year combined. It also collected more than $100,000 in earned income tax.

June historically is the most profitable month for business privilege tax because most companies pay their taxes at the April 15 deadline, and it takes about six weeks for them to be added into the city's account, Smith said.

For the first half of 2013, earned income tax revenues are up 5 percent from last year, while business privilege collections are up 13 percent.

City residents pay 1 percent of their earned income to the tax. Half of that goes to the city and half goes to the school district.

Service businesses pay 0.7 percent of their gross revenue in privilege taxes, while retail businesses pay 0.15 percent and wholesale businesses pay 0.1 percent.

The city has collected nearly $518,000 in income tax and more than $1 million in business privilege taxes during the first six months.
