Former Gov. William Scranton Jr. dies at 96
HARRISBURG — William Scranton Jr., a former Pennsylvania governor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has died at the age of 96, according to a family spokesman.
Mike DeVanney says Scranton died Sunday night of a cerebral hemorrhage at a retirement community in Montecito, Calif.
DeVanney said this morning that Scranton also had a home in Waverly, Pa., just outside the city named for the former governor’s family.
Scranton was Pennsylvania’s 38th governor, serving one term — the maximum at the time — from 1963 to 1967.
