BlueSox get huge victory
Tyler Ferguson has been outstanding this season for the Butler BlueSox.
The left-handed reliever, who has pitched long and short out of the bullpen, was stellar again in front of a record crowd at Pullman Park Friday night.
Ferguson struck out four in 1 2-3 innings of work in front of 1,460 fans who piled into Pullman Park to see Ferguson and Butler edge Richmond 3-2.
Matt Peters scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning after Richmond had tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth off BlueSox reliever John Paul Watson, who was making his first appearance and hit the only two batters he faced.
Anthony Battaglia was also making a first for Butler. The right-hander from Staten Island, N.Y., was making his first start in two years and pitched 5 2-3 scoreless innings.
Ryan Fitzgerald singled home Butler native Cody Herald to put Butler up 1-0 in the third inning.
Josh Forbes doubled home Tyler Detmer in the sixth inning to stake the BlueSox to a 2-0 advantage.
Ferguson struck out the side on the top of the ninth for his fourth win of the season. Ferguson lowered his ERA to 1.62 and has surrendered just one earned run in July.
Butler (30-22) now leads Chillicothe, which lost 2-1 to Slippery Rock, by two games for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.
The BlueSox still trail West Virginia (34-18) by four games.
Slippery Rock 2, Chillicothe 1 — Zach Strecker gave up just one run in 8 2-3 innings as the Sliders hung on to beat the Paints.
Ryan Furtney got the final out for the save.
Matt Calhoun went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored for Slippery Rock (23-29).
