The attorney for a University of Pittsburgh researcher charged with killing his neurologist wife with cyanide says his client wasn't fleeing police when he left Florida — he was simply driving back to Pennsylvania to surrender.
Instead, West Virginia State Police stopped 64-year-old Dr. Robert Ferrante last night and he's being held in that state until he can be extradited to Pennsylvania to face a charge of criminal homicide in the April 20 death of his wife, Dr. Autumn Klein.
Top 2 fired from detention center
The top two managers have been fired from the county-run Shuman Juvenile Detention Center in Pittsburgh.
The Allegheny County facility has been operating under a provisional license from the state Department of Public Welfare since May, when regulators determined the center hadn't addressed violations earlier this year, including some stemming from an incident in which a guard slammed a teen's head into a door frame.
County spokeswoman Amie Downs confirmed director William Simmons and his longtime deputy, Lynette Drawn-Williamson, were no longer with the county.
