PITTSBURGH — Authorities say three people were injured when a pickup truck plunged at least 30 feet from an overhead ramp onto a street near the Allegheny County jail.

Police said the truck dropped from the Liberty Bridge ramp and landed on Second Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Commander Scott Schubert told a Pittsburgh newspaper that three of the four passengers were in serious condition.

He said “It's very fortunate they are alive.”

Officials said the truck was heading south on the bridge when it went up on the sidewalk, drove through a fence and “pingponged” down to the street 30 or 40 feet below.

PHILADELPHIA — Relatives and friends have gathered to remember a woman and three children struck and killed on a Philadelphia boulevard a week ago.Tuesday's remembrance took place on what would have been the second birthday of one of the children of 28-year-old Samara Banks.Some brought birthday balloons, which were released into the air after participants sang “Happy Birthday.”Prosecutors allege that two men were drag racing at the time of the crash. Both are charged with third-degree murder, vehicular homicide and other counts.

PITTSBURGH — A University of Pittsburgh Medical Center official says there will be no immediate change to the smoking policy of the Altoona Regional Health System following its acquisition by UMPC.Starting last fall, Altoona stopped hiring smokers as part of a tightening of its antismoking policy.UPMC also bars tobacco products from its grounds but the organization continues to hire smokers. In mid-2014, it will bar tobacco use throughout employee work shifts.Greg Peaslee, UPMC chief human resources and administrative services officer, said there will be no immediate changes at Altoona.
