Dorothy Jane Coulter Fair, 97, of Home2Me, Slippery Rock, passed away at 9:40 a.m. Friday at Home2Me.

She was born on March 10, 1916, in Butler to Bryon “Ted” Jay Coulter Sr. and Margaret Jane Myers Coulter.

She married James Albert Fair, who preceded her in death in 1999.

Dorothy enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting and embroidery work, but her love was gardening, in later years flower gardening. Being an individual of varied talents and abilities she was instrumental in building the Slippery Rock Baptist Church with her carpentry and construction skills alongside of her husband. She was employed by Spencer Nursing Home, worked in the cafeteria of the Slippery Rock Elementary School and baby sat two generations of the neighbors little ones, to whom she was “Mama Fair.” She taught Sunday school for 35 years and would want you to know the most important thing in life is knowing Jesus. She helped with Bible School, AWANA, was counselor at Seneca Hills Bible Conference, sang in the choir and was a member of Joy Missionary Circle. In later years, she was active in AARP where her late husband was chaplain. A highlight of their 66 years together was the trip to Hawaii as a gift from their daughters for their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Mae “Peggy” Allen and husband, William, of Torrington, Conn., Gladys Avonell Johnson of Grand Junction, Colo., Shirley Jean Sack and husband, Charles, of Slippery Rock; one sister, Alice Catherine Isacco of West Sunbury; six grandchildren, Lynn Allen of Torrington, Conn., Robert Allen of Garland, Texas, Charlene Corey of Montrose, Colo., Terry Utrup, of Soldotna, Alaska, Melody Mason of San Diego, Calif. and Philip Allen of Garland, Texas; 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, Bryon Jay Coulter Jr.; Robert Nelson Coulter; Earl Richard Coulter; and a sister, Mary Louie Majetic.

FAIR — The family of Dorothy Jane Coulter Fair, who passed away Friday, June 14, 2013, will receive friends at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Monday.Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Monday, with Pastor Jerry Caskey, her former pastor of the Unity Baptist Church in Harlansburg, officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Unity Baptist Church of Harlansburg, 304 Old Route 19, New Castle, PA.
