Hawkins continues to dominate
Robert Hawkins won't be getting the key to the city of Chillicothe, Ohio, any time soon.
Doesn't matter. Hawkins owns Chillicothe anyway.
The Butler left-hander shut down the Paints again, giving up just six hits and one run in eight innings of work as the BlueSox downed Chillicothe 7-1 at Pullman Park Friday night.
It was Hawkins' third start against the Paints this season. In those three outings, he is 2-0 with an 0.78 ERA.
Butler manager Anthont Rebyanski shuffled his rotation so Hawkins could pitch against them.
“We talked last week about moving some guys around a little bit,” Rebyanski said. “We moved GJ (Senchak) up a day to pitch against Lorain. I wanted to go with what I thought our best shot was to win Game 1 against (Chillicothe).
“Hawkins threw a great game,” Rebyanski added. “Eight strong innings again.”
Hawkins threw 96 pitches — 63 for strikes — and got some help from a defense that turned three double plays behind him and played error free.
“We have a pretty good infield all around,” Rebyanski said. “(Alex) Jurich hasn't played a lot of first base, but he's come in and done a really nice job there. It's great to see. As a pitcher, you are able to trust your defense.”
Butler also hit the ball well against a very difficult pitcher to get to.
Chillicothe left-hander Steve Laudicina came into his start with a 6-1 record and a 1.32 ERA. In his last outing, he tossed a four-hit shutout.
But the BlueSox hit him hard in the first inning, plating two runs thanks to a pair of doubles by Matt Peters and Tyler Detmer for a 2-0 lead.
Butler added another run off Laudicina in the sixth thanks to three consecutive hits and a bobble by Chillicothe centerfielder Vinnie Booker to go ahead 3-1.
The BlueSox opened up the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off Tito Nava.
Peters had another hit and a stolen base and scored on a triple by Tyler Detmer. Two more runs came across on a two-run single by Jurich and another scored on a baserunning gaffe that turned fortuitous.
Jurich was able to score from third when Kris Cayton got caught between second and third after a single by Dylan Wolsonovich.
Butler had 13 hits in the game, four for extra bases.
“We hit the ball very well tonight,” Peters said. “This can be a dangerous lineup and right now from the top to the bottom, we're all seeing the ball pretty well.”
Detmer had three hits and was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Peters had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and raised his average to .365, which is second in the Prospect League.
Adam Tyson worked a perfect ninth for Butler, striking out two, and lowered his ERA to 0.59.
It was a good start to what could be a pivotal homestand for Butler.
The BlueSox have one more game with Chillicothe, who leads them by one game in the standings, and two more against first-place West Virginia, which leads Butler by three games, before the All-Star break.
Notes: There was a moment of silence before the game for St. Bonaventure junior and BlueSox pitcher Andrew Revello, who died Wednesday as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident June 1 in Butler Township. Revello pitched May 29 against Chillicothe, going seven strong innings to earn the win. BlueSox players wore his initials on the side of their batting helmets. “He was a great kid and its such a tragedy,” Peters said. “We wanted to honor and remember him.” His jersey has hung in the Butler dugout since the accident and hung there still on Friday. ... Taylor Schmidt swiped his 26th base of the season, one shy of the BlueSox team record.
