BlueSox pitching straightens out

You can count Jon Anderson as a man of his word.

After allowing a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the first inning Sunday night at Pullman Park, the right-hander had just one thing to say to Butler BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski.

“He told me that he wasn’t going to give up another hit the rest of the night,” said Rebyanski. “And he didn’t.”

The only three batters to reach base against Anderson over the next seven innings did via a walk. He earned the victory in Butler’s 6-2 Prospect League win over Lorain County. His eight innings of work also featured seven strikeouts.

The Ironmen (15-21) greeted Anderson with a single and double from the first two batters of the game, Isaac Smith and Billy Salem. With one out, Zach Ratcliff smacked a ball off the first-base bag and into right field, scoring the two baserunners. Anderson got out of the inning with no further damage and wound up retiring 15 batters in a row.

“I felt like I was throwing my stuff in that first inning,” he said. “They were just blooping the ball and finding holes. There were a couple of bad breaks and I knew I just had to settle down.”

Anderson began to dominate Lorain’s hitters in the second, the first of four straight innings in which he set the Ironmen down in order.

When the visitors finally managed their next baserunner with a one-out walk to Salem in the top of the sixth frame, Anderson shut the door on the scoring opportunity. Scott Splett reached base on a fielder’s choice and stole second, but was stranded there when Ratcliff grounded out to end the inning.

“We didn’t do a good job of making adjustments,” said Lorain manager Joe Rhomberg. “We kept trying to pull his (Anderson’s) fastball.”

Meanwhile, Butler’s offense had tied the game against Lorain starter Jake Post. Dylan Wolsonovich drove in Russell Clark with a groundout in the third and Matt Peters’ leadoff triple in the fourth was followed by Tyler Detmer’s RBI single with one out.

The BlueSox (19-17) broke the stalemate for good in the seventh when Wolsonovich’s single brought home Taylor Schmidt and Alex Miklos.

Detmer added an RBI double and Alex Jurich a run-scoring single, both in the eighth inning, after which Anderson remained on the bench in favor of reliever Adam Tyson, who gave up a pair of two-out base hits in the ninth, but allowed no runs.

“I felt fine and still had some energy,” said Anderson, “but I knew our closer would go out and get the job done.”

“Jon goes out and competes, it’s a trend with him,” said Rebyanski. “He doesn’t want to come out of the game and you can see that.”

Anderson’s effort was much-needed. In Friday’s loss to Chillicothe, six Butler pitchers combined to allow the Paints to score 17 runs on 17 hits. The debacle included 10 walks.

Even though Butler rebounded with a 5-2 win over Lorain on Saturday, 11 more walks were charged to the BlueSox pitching staff.

“Friday’s game was a nightmare,” said Rebyanski. “On Saturday, we found a way to get timely outs, but still walked too many.”
