Sliders sweep twinbill at home
The Slippery Rock Sliders swept the Chillicothe Paints in a Prospect League doubleheader Wednesday at Jack Critchfield Park.
The Sliders earned a 4-3 victory in the first game after the Paints rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.
Connor McCallum hit a walk-off single, scoring Keegan Ghidotti in the bottom of the eighth. It was an unearned run after the prior batter, Mike Andries, reached on an error by the first baseman to keep the inning alive.
David Wilson pitched six innings of three-hit ball and allowed one earned run for the Sliders. Kevin Becker-Menditto earned the win in relief by pitching two innings. He endured a blown save in the seventh after allowing two runs, but only one was earned.
Dan Hurlimann was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, while McCallum was also 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs.
Zach Strecker tossed a complete-game shutout to pace Slippery Rock to a 3-0 win in the second game. He struck out four and surrendered just three hits. Ryne Clark paced the offensive effort, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
The sweep improved the Sliders to 10-12 on the season, while the Paints dropped to 15-11.
Richmond RiverRats 4, Butler BlueSox 3 — Trevor Kimm broke a 3-3 tie with a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the ninth off Tyler Swarmer to lift the RiverRats to victory.
The BlueSox (15-11) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third with RBI hits from Matt Peters, Taylor Schmidt and Russell Clark, but Richmond (12-14) struck back with one in the fourth and two in the sixth to draw even.
Robert Hawkins pitched five innings, gave up seven hits and one run for Butler, while Swarmer allowed three earned runs and struck out five in 3 2-3 innings.
The BlueSox — who are tied with Chillicothe for first in the East Division — travel to Slippery Rock for a two-game series, starting tonight at 7:05 p.m.
