WASHINGTON — Police were searching for a bank robbery suspect who fatally shot a supermarket customer who ran after him and was shot trying to stop the suspect near his getaway car.

South Strabane Township police say the dead man is 46-year-old Vincent Kelley, of Washington, Pa.

He was shopping at a Giant Eagle in Strabane Square when the suspect robbed a Citizens Bank branch in the store about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say Kelley tried to subdue the suspect but was shot several times before the suspect sped away in his car.

Police Chief Donald Zofchak says, “I certainly applaud a citizen's efforts to help society, but you see the ramifications. It cost him his life.”

PITTSBURGH — More than 1,000 bicyclists rode single-file along the last mile of a Pittsburgh-to-Washington trail to mark the full trail's opening.Cyclists celebrated Saturday in Pittsburgh, including a group that had ridden from Washington starting Friday.Ground was broken in October on the final mile of the Great Allegheny Passage, a 141-mile trail from the Pittsburgh area to Cumberland, Md. From there, the trail links with the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, which stretches to Washington.The final link of the trail had quietly opened last month, ahead of Saturday's ceremony.

JAMISON CITY — Four people say they rescued a young bear whose head had been stuck in a plastic jar for at least 11 days. The group managed the feat while armed only with a rope and flashlight. Area residents first spotted the 100-pound bruin with its head in a jar on June 3. But it eluded game wardens.Then Thursday night, a man saw the animal in Jamison City, Columbia County. He joined two women and a local game commissioner on a wild chase to lasso the bear and remove the jar.They say the frightened but powerful bruin fell into a swimming pool at least twice during the ordeal. But the group eventually yanked off the jar and set the animal free.
