BlueSox down Sliders in extras
SLIPPERY ROCK — Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski had to dig deep into his bullpen again aftter starting pitcher Matt Warren had to leave the game with an ankle injury after three scoreless innings.
And they came through — again.
The pen gave up just two earned runs in seven innings of work, capped by a dominant two-inning performance by Tyler Swarmer, as Butler dropped Slippery Rock 5-4 in 10 innings at Jack Critchfield Park Sunday night.
The win capped off a two-game sweep of Slippery Rock, both won by pitchers out of the bullpen.
On Saturday, Reid Noah picked up the win in relief after seven strong innings were turned it by starter Adam Aldred.
Swarmer, a hard-throwing left-hander, got the final two outs in the ninth Saturday to get the save in a 4-3 victory. He struck out three in two spotless innings Sunday to earn the win.
“Tyler has come out two nights in a row and shut those guys down,” Rebyanski said. “He’s done a very good job in what he’s been doing out there lately.”
Warren was cruising in his outing until he came up lame after he slipped while coming off the mound to cover first base in the bottom of the third inning. He got the final two outs of the frame, but didn’t return.
Jason Schwartz relieved him and gave up two runs in two innings as Slippery Rock grabbed a 2-1 lead after five, but Butler responded with three runs in the top of the sixth off Sliders’ starter Alex Watson and reliever Kyle Halbohn.
Watson pitched five-plus innings, giving up three runs. He walked five.
The big blow for Butler in the sixth was a two-run double by Tyler Detmer.
The BlueSox held on to that 4-2 lead until the bottom of the eighth when Slippery Rock scored two unearned runs against Anthony Battaglia.
No. 9 hitter Tom Crimi laced a two-out, two-run single to tie the game at 4-4.
Rebyanski had Swarmer ready, but decided to stick with Battaglia.
“I probably left Anthony in one too many batters,” Rebyanski said. “With a lefty (Crimi), I probably should have brought in Swarmer there, but you can’t look back on it. I was looking for that little inside cut fastball (Battaglia) throws to get a broken-bat, roll-me-over kind of ground ball, but he just found a hole and that was that.”
Butler (11-7) plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th after nearly squandering a golden opportunity.
The BlueSox put runners on first and second with no one out when Slippery Rock interim manager D.J. Lidyard brought in Kevin Becker-Menditto, a hard-throwing side-armer who was the Prospect League Pitcher of the Week earlier this month.
Becker-Menditto promptly picked off Matt Peters at second.
“Outs on the bases, I’ve always said this, are the third-base coach’s fault,” said Rebyanski, who is also the third-base coach for the BlueSox. “Those are my fault. We can’t have that.”
A passed ball allowed Adam Jurich to move to second base and then he advanced to third when Becker-Menditto’s fourth pitch on an intentional walk squirted out of the mitt of Slippery Rock catcher Dan Palazzo and back to the screen.
It looked like Becker-Menditto was going to escape after he struck out Tyler Detmer and induced a ground ball by Matt Berezo, but the bouncer glanced off the foot of Sliders’ second baseman Ricky McCollach for an error that allowed Jurich to score.
“A little fluke error there and we got a run across,” Rebyanski said. “That’s all it took.”
Butler is on a roll now with four straight victories. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock (6-12) has dropped four in a row.
Rebyanski said there is no mystery why the BlueSox are winning: pitching.
“Pitching is simple. You throw strikes and things get a little easier,” he said. “The games that we have struggled in on the mound ... is when we work from behind and get high pitch counts. The games we are getting outs and quick inning, we are pounding the zone. It’s common sense.”
Notes: Butler graduate Cody Herald is still recovering from the foul ball he took of his right cheek Friday night. He broke four bones and his right eye was swollen shut. He is being evaluated further today. ... Berezo played his final game of the season with the BlueSox. He is leaving to do an internship at Stanford University. ... Lidyard was filling in for Slippery Rock manager Brad Neffendorf, who is serving a suspension. Lidyard could not be reached for comment.
