HARRISBURG — Backers of a Republican-penned bill in Pennsylvania to prevent coverage of most abortions under policies offered in federal insurance marketplaces rebuffed two more attempts to change it.

The state Senate rejected two amendments Tuesday, including one to expand the exceptions to allow an abortion when a woman's health is at risk. A final vote is expected today.

Opponents say the bill expands restrictions on abortion rights and discriminates against poor women. Proponents say it's in line with Pennsylvania's long-standing ban on taxpayer-funded elective abortions.

Another amendment would have allowed policies in the marketplace to include abortion coverage as long as a person used their own money to buy them.

RED LION — A central Pennsylvania school district has refused to allow a transgender student’s male name to be announced during his graduation ceremony later this week.Eighteen-year-old Isaak Wolfe had asked the Red Lion School District in York County to allow his male name to be announced during Friday night’s ceremony.The school board said earlier that Wolfe would be allowed to wear a boy’s black graduation gown.Board solicitor Ben Pratt said a diploma is a legal document and must bear the recipient’s legal name, and Wolfe’s given female name would be read as he walks across the stage.
