MIAMI — Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert was fined $75,000 on Sunday by the NBA for using a gay slur and profanity during his news conference after Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals.
Hibbert also apologized for the comments.
“While Roy has issued an apology, which is no doubt sincere, a fine is necessary to reinforce that such offensive comments will not be tolerated by the NBA,” Commissioner David Stern said in a statement.
Earlier Sunday, the team issued a statement from Hibbert in which he said he was sorry for his “insensitive remarks.”
ATLANTA — Former NBA star Mookie Blaylock was charged with driving on a suspended license and failing to stay in his lane in a head-on crash that killed a woman, police said Sunday.Jonesboro Police Chief Franklin Allen said authorities wanted to talk to Blaylock, 46, before deciding whether he should face more serious charges. Officers had not been able to speak with Blaylock because of his injuries but they hope to do so as early as Monday, the chief said.
LOS ANGELES — Seven-time All-Star Grant Hill retired from the NBA after 19 seasons, ending an injury-plagued career that included an Olympic gold medal.The Los Angeles Clippers announced the news on Saturday.The 40-year-old forward averaged 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals during his NBA career that included stints with the Clippers, Detroit, Orlando and Phoenix.
DETROIT — Simon Pagenaud won the crash-filled Detroit Grand Prix on Sunday for his first IndyCar victory.The Frenchman finished 5.6 seconds in front of James Jakes in the second of two races on the 2.36-mile Belle Isle street course.The reigning IndyCar Rookie of the Year hadn't finished better than second.
SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms with Eric Mangini to be an offensive consultant for the NFC champions, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said Saturday.The former Cleveland Browns and New York Jets coach will work on Jim Harbaugh's staff for the two-time reigning NFC West winners, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had made no formal announcement.
ATLANTA — Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with bursitis in his left knee.The Nationals tried to give Harper time to heal without using the disabled list. Manager Davey Johnson said the move became necessary when the team needed help in the bullpen before Saturday night’s game against the Braves.
