Commissioner Eckstein wants to cut agenda-setting meetings

Butler County Commissioner Jim Eckstein wants to cut the Monday agenda-setting meetings that precede Wednesday voting meetings, calling them redundant.

During agenda-settings such as the one held today, the commissioners discuss what items should be voted on during the succeeding Wednesday.

County staff and other elected officials present information to the commissioners explaining why they need some type of action, including expenditures, grant applications and contract approvals.

Eckstein, at this morning’s meeting, said the commissioners could contact the appropriate people to ask their questions without tying up everyone with additional meetings.

Commissioner Bill McCarrier, board chairman, disagreed with Eckstein, saying the agenda-setting meetings serve a purpose.

McCarrier said the agenda-setting meetings provide a dialogue between the commissioners and other officials.

Commissioner Dale Pinkerton also supports keeping agenda-setting meetings.

The commissioners are set to discuss Eckstein’s proposal at their 10 a.m. meeting Wednesday. The meeting is held in the first-floor meeting room of the government center.
