Butler bats go silent in defeat to Miners

A fireworks display followed Friday night’s Prospect League baseball game at Pullman Park.

Butler’s bats provided no such show.

A trio of West Virginia right-handers shut out the BlueSox on just three hits in the Miners’ 6-0 victory.

The dominance from the mound was spearheaded by Jaesung Hwang, who gave up the three hits in his seven innings of work, which also included four strikeouts and no walks.

“Everything he throws moves,” said West Virginia manager Tim Epling of Hwang. “And he keeps his pitches around the strike zone. That can be very tough for hitters. He’s going to be a special player.”

Dustin Nuckels and Jordan Pemble pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to complete the shutout.

Butler first baseman Justin Brozick tallied two of his team’s three hits, singles in the second and fifth inning. Catcher Russell Clark managed a leadoff base hit in the bottom of the sixth and was the lone BlueSox player to advance past second base in the game. He moved to second and third on groundouts from Matt Berezo and Alex Miklos, respectively. But with two outs, Hwang got Tyler Detmer to ground out to keep Butler off the scoreboard.

“I believe we are a good-hitting team,” said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski, “but there is an old saying that good pitching beats good hitting. He (Hwang) was outstanding tonight. He did a great job of mixing his pitches, which kept our guys off-balance. All we were doing was beating balls into the ground.”

For the first four innings, Butler’s Jon Anderson matched Hwang by holding the Miners scoreless, but he hit a wall in the top of the fifth.

Anderson began the inning by hitting Jordan Parris with a pitch. Preston Troutman followed with a run-scoring double and, though Troutman was thrown out trying to stretch his effort into a triple, the Miners did not let up.

Three more hits in a row — off the bats of Dale Davis, Kenny May and Pat Kregeloh — scored two more runs and chased Anderson from the game.

“He hadn’t pitched in a while,” Rebyanski said of Anderson. “His velocity started to go down and when you get tired, your arm slot changes.”

Jordan Schwartz came on in relief and gave up a single to Cameron Balough that scored another run, closing the book on Anderson’s outing. West Virginia (2-2) added one more tally in the inning on an RBI-groundout from Brandon Koch and a game that was once a classic pitcher’s duel was now a 5-0 lead for the Miners.

“In the first couple of innings, we were hitting the ball hard, but didn’t have anything to show for it,” said Epling. “This was the first game this season that I thought we hit the ball consistently well.”

Schwartz pitched three innings of relief, allowing one more run in the eighth frame before Grove City High product Jason Revesz recorded the final five outs for Butler (2-2).

The BlueSox travel to Richmond (Ind.) for a pair of games this weekend.
