A field of 13 young women will compete June 8 for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Butler County. The annual scholarship program is set for 7 p.m. June 8 at the Butler Intermediate High School, 551 Fairground Hill Road.

Last year, more than $15,000 in scholarship awards were given out, according to Barbara Brandon, the chairwoman of the event. The scholarships will go directly to the college or university the award-winners will be attending following their graduation from high school in 2014.

Scholarships will be awarded to the top three contestants based on interviews, scholastic achievement, talent, fitness and self expression.

In addition to winning a scholarship, the county winner will proceed to the state event this August in Johnstown. The state winner will advance to the national program in Mobile, Ala., following her high school graduation in June 2014.

“This will be our 52nd program celebrating the young women of Butler County,” said Brandon.

Amelia Bishop, the 2013 Distinguished Young Woman of Butler County, won more than $6,000 in scholarship awards at the local and state level. She will be graduating June 6 from Butler High School. She plans to attend Penn State.

This year's contestants:• Ansu Benjamin is the daughter of Benjamin John and Suja Benjamin of Butler. She attends Butler High School, where she is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council and Latin Club. She will give a piano performance of “Bayou Tapestry” composed by Christopher Norton.• Maggie Eileen Donaldson is the daughter of Victor and Jan Nieto of Butler and Paul and Wendy Donaldson of Butler. She attends Butler High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, Strolling Strings and Mock Trial. She will give a violin performance to “Irish Party in Third Class” from the movie “Titanic.”• Hannah Elizabeth Fryman is the daughter of Robert and Mary Fryman of Butler. She attends Butler High School, where she is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and youth group. She will present a violin solo and sign language performance to “Alive” by Natalie Grant.• Kiana Rebecca Green is the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Green of Butler. She attends Butler High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, orchestra and PMEA music. She will give a violin performance to “Orange Blossom Special” composed by Ervin T. Rouse.

• Paula Lynn Gunniers is the daughter of Brien Gunniers Sr. of Slippery Rock. She attends Slippery Rock High School, where she plays softball and is a member of youth group, as well as the Prospect Girls & Boys Club. She will perform a rifle and dance performance to “Rumor Has It” by Adele.• Elizabeth Nora Haughey is the daughter of Jim and Lori Haughey of Butler. She attends Butler High School, where she is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, the National Honor Society and the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. She will tap dance to “Big Time Boppin” from the Disney movie “The Wild.”• Sarah Elizabeth Herold is the daughter of John and Beth Herold of Butler. She attends Butler High School, where she is involved in school musicals and plays, was a cheerleader coach and a hospital candy striper. She will sing “Forget About the Boy” from the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”• Sarah Elisabeth Kadlubek is the daughter of Brian and Lisa Kadlubek of Slippery Rock. She attends Slippery Rock High School, where she is junior class secretary and a member of Student Council. She will give a vocal and guitar performance of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.

• Kennedy Virginia Kreutz is the daughter of Scott and Shari Kriutz of Slippery Rock. She attends Slippery Rock High School, where she is a member of the marching band's Rocknettes dance line and is a camp counselor. She will do a dance performance to “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars.• Janae Elizabeth Nebel is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Nebel of Slippery Rock. She attends Slippery Rock High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club. Her talent presentation will be a dance and gymnastic performance to “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson.• Tatiana Celeste Noel is the daughter of Robert Noel of Butler and Elena Flores-Noel of Butler. She is a student at Butler High School, where she participates in kickboxing and is a member of the orchestra and National Junior Classical league. She will sing “Don't Rain on My Parade” from the movie “Funny Girl.”• Kendyll Adele-McCall Smith is the daughter of Jeff and Carisa Smith of Petrolia. She attends Karns City High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society High Honor Roll. She is a member of the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Club volleyball team. She will give a vocal and guitar performance of “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban.• Julianna Elizabeth Slomer is the daughter of Paul and Nicole Slomer of Butler. A Knoch High School student, she is a member of the school musical dance troupe and the National Honor Society. She was a state qualifier in Future Business Leaders of America business calculations. She will do a jazz dance performance to “Take Five” by The Dave Brubeck Quartet.
