Bears football moves to 2-0
The Butler County Bears operated on all cylinders Saturday in defeating the Pittsburgh Blue Devils, 48-12, in semi-pro football action Saturday at the old Duquesne High School stadium.
The Bears (2-0) scored on the second play of the game when linebacker Justin Switzer forced a fumble in the end zone that he recovered for a touchdown. James Shope scored on a 16-yard run and Jason Majocha’s second PAT gave the visitors a 14-0 lead.
On a fourth-and-3 from the Pittsburgh 27-yard line, Steven Cupec scored on a 27-yard run for a 21-6 lead. Vince Papley returned an interception 47 yards for a score to hike the margin to 27-6.
Erik Fuhrer connected with Stephen Conto for a 40-yard TD pass and Shope ran 81 yards for another score as the Bears led 41-6 at halftime.
Three plays into the second half, Fuhrer tossed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Pinson to conclude Butler County’s scoring.
Fuhrer completed six of 15 passes for 103 yards. Majocha booted seven PATs and Switzer led the defense with 7.5 tackles, 2.5 quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery.
The Bears are the highest scoring team in the Ohio Football League with 78 points through two games. Their home opener is at 7 p.m. Saturday against the Strabane Spartans (1-1) at Moniteau High School.
This will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night and the Bears are seeking their first 3-0 start in franchise history.
