Peter Kipin

Peter Kipin

Peter Kipin, 74, of Butler, died early Sunday at the Lowrie House in Butler surrounded by his family.

He was born July 29, 1938, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and was a son of Ukrainian immigrants, the late Yarofey and Aleksandra (Sweriduk) Kipin.

As a young engineer, Pete moved to Butler to work on designs for Project 600 at the Armco Steel Corp. Following his passion to find alternatives to industrial landfills, he established Kipin Industries Inc. (KII) in 1978. Throughout the following decades, KII developed proprietary solutions to clean industrial waste lagoons and to convert hazardous byproducts into usable fuels. Pete worked closely with the U.S. EPA on remediating Superfund sites such as Exxon Fairmont Coke Works, where coke byproduct waste was converted into power plant fuel and property could be safely redeveloped for community use.

Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Patricia Gail (Bagnell) Kipin; his three children, Pamela Johnson, Kimberly Kipin-McDonald and Peter Kipin Jr.; five grandchildren, Turner Johnson, Ali Johnson, Sara Kipin, Ethan Kipin and Eli Kipin; two brothers, Nick Kipin and John Kipin; and one sister, Mary Kipin.
