Henry Houpt

Henry J. Houpt Sr., 95, of Mars died Tuesday evening at UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless Township.

He was born in Pittsburgh on Nov. 3, 1917, and was the son of the late Charles and Sophia Kirschner Houpt.

Henry was an optician for White and Haines Optical, Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh.

He was a member of the St. Kilian Roman Catholic Church, was the founder of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and a member for over 65 years. He also belonged to the Holy Name Society.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kathryn Carnegie Houpt, who he married on June 3, 1940, and who died on Feb. 21, 1988.

He was the father of Henry J. Houpt Jr. (Barb) of Avella, Pa., Thomas R. Houpt (Rebecca) of South Fayette, Pa., Samuel J. Houpt (Mary) of Allison Park, Pa., Edward F. Houpt of Mars, Vincent P. Houpt (Diane) of Chicora, Joseph Houpt (Teresa) of Spring, Texas, Mary Carol Baier (Joseph) of Bath, Pa., Regina Marie Riegler (Karl) of Middlesex Township, Mary Catherine Houpt of Cranberry Township, Mary Ann Weyand (Dennis) of Beaver, Pa., Mary Patricia Capelli (Thomas) of Allentown, Pa., Mary Christine Dragun of Fox Chapel, Pa. and the late Mary Margaret Nickl; father-in-law of John Nickl of Evans City; brother of Emma Glassbrenner of Perrysville, Pa., Dorothy Zewe of Girard, Pa., and Trudy Flaherty of Perrysville, Pa., and the late Charles Houpt, the Rev. Samuel Houpt Sr., Mary Carol Marie Houpt, SSJ, Esther Arch, Patricia Houpt and Ermina Erma Houpt; 44 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

HOUPT — Friends of Henry J. Houpt Sr., who died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, will be received at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave. Mars, from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian burial will be in the St. Kilian Church, Mars Worship Site, corner of Clark and Cherry Sts. Mars, at 11 a.m. Saturday. Father Charles Bober, pastor, officiating.
