Pullman hosting World Series

Small college event begins Monday

The 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series will take place next week at Pullman Park.

The 10-team, double-elimination tournament is being hosted by Penn State-Greater Allegheny. PSU-GA coach and athletic director Jim Chester is the tournament director.

Beginning Monday morning, as many as 19 games will be played over four days.

Qualifying teams will be coming from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Virginia, Illinois and Alabama.

The USCAA is an organization of colleges with enrollment of 1,500 students or less.

“There are more than 100 such schools in the United States,” Chester said. “The top 10 teams in the nation will be competing in Butler.

“We held our conference tournament at Pullman Park a couple of years ago and I fell in love with the venue and how everyone was treated. This is a fitting site for our national tournament.”

PSU-GA qualified by winning the Penn State University Athletic Conference and by being the host school. The Yankee Small College Conference also gets an automatic bid to the tourney.

The other teams received at-large bids based on a power ranking system.

“The caliber of play here will be similar to the Butler BlueSox,” Chester said. “It’s quality baseball.”

Among the teams returning to the World Series from last year is No. 1 seed The Apprentice School out of Newport News, Va. The Builders won a school-record 31 games this season and were national runners-up last year.

Other returning teams are Southern Virginia University, Selma (Ala.) University, Clark State Community College from Springfield, Ohio, and Penn College.

Briarcliffe (N.Y,.) College won the 2011 World Series and returns to nationals after a one-year absence, as does PSU-GA. The University of Cincinnati-Clermont returns for the first time since 2010.

Making national tourney debuts are St. Joseph’s College out of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lindenwood University-Belleville from Illinois.

The teams will host a free youth clinic for kids ages 6-12 from noon to 1:30 Sunday at Pullman Park, The first 100 kids receive a free T-shirt.

The Butler Days Inn is hosting all 10 teams, along with a 4 p.m. Sunday banquet recognizing them. Former major leaguer Sid Bream will be guest speaker at the fete. Tickets are available for $35.

“This tournament is bringing more than 1,000 people to Butler. The restaurants are going to love this,” Chester said.

A home run derby involving the participating teams takes place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Pullman Park. Admission will be charged.

Admission cost for games will be $6 for a single game, $10 for a day pass and $20 for a tournament pass.
