Rock baseball, softball sweep

The Slippery Rock University baseball team rallied from a 5-4 deficit to walk off with a 6-5 win over Notre Dame (Ohio) in the eighth inning to complete a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at Critchfield Park.

Graeme Zaparzynski provided the clutch hit for SRU (24-14), which was mishandled by the left fielder, allowing Will Kengor and Royce Copeland to scoot home for the game-winning runs.

John Kovalik was credited with the victory on the mound after allowing one earned run over two innings. Eric Napoli absorbed the loss after two unearned runs and did not retire a batter.

The Rock claimed the Game 1 victory by a 3-2 margin on the strength of a three-run third inning.

Kengor — who was 6-for-7 on the day — ripped a two-RBI double before scoring on a single from John Shaffer.

Mike Dunn improved to 5-1 on the season after allowing two runs — one earned — over 6 2-3 innings, while striking out three and walking none. Kovalik earned his first save of the campaign by retiring the only batter he faced to end the game.

SoftballThe Slippery Rock University softball scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up and Katie Kaiser scored Katie Saluga with an RBI single in the ninth, lifting The Rock to a 3-2 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader sweep over Clarion on Wednesday.Trailing 2-0, Saluga singled home Sarah Lutz in the seventh, before Kaiser drove home Megan Maloney with a sacrifice fly to left field. Ashley Knight pitched all nine innings for SRU, struck out 13 and walked four.Butler grad Jenna Geibel was 6-for-7 on the day, including a solo homer in the second game to spot Slippery Rock (13-14) with a 1-0 edge.Clarion tied the game in the fifth, but Taylor Welch belted an RBI double to score Lutz in the bottom of the sixth for the game-winning run.Emily Lobdell hurled seven innings and struck out two while picking up the win for The Rock.
