Rock gets split vs. Mercyhurst

The Slippery Rock University baseball team managed just four hits in a 1-0 loss in Game 1, but rallied for a 4-3 win in Game 2 to earn a doubleheader split against Mercyhurst University at Jack Critchield Park Saturday afternoon.

Kyle Schneider was the hard-luck loser in the first game, striking out nine and not issuing a walk in a complete game.

In the second game, Royce Copeland went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and Will Kengor scored two runs to lead The Rock’s offense.

Jon Anderson picked up the win and Anton Constantino earned the save.

Slippery Rock is now 22-14 overall and 6-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West. The Rock dropped three out of four against the Lakers this week. All three losses were by one run.

SoftballButler graduate Jenna Geibel hit a two-run home run to lift SRU to an 8-2 win in the second game to salvage a doubleheader split at Mercyhurst University Sunday.Geibel’s two-run blast, her fifth of the season, helped The Rock to an 8-2 win after it dropped the first game 3-1 to the Lakers.Katie Saluga also added a grand slam in the second-game win. Saluga now leads The Rock (11-15, 3-5)with seven home runs.

Track and FieldButler graduate Katelyn Wetzel won a pair of individual events and was a member of a winning relay team as the Slippery Rock University women’s track and field team dominated at the Dave Labor Invitational at SRU this weekend.Wetzel won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.3 seconds. She also won the 200, finishing that sprint in 26.03 seconds.Wetzel ran a leg of SRU’s 400-meter relay, which won with a time of 49.23 seconds.In all, the SRU women won 12 of the 17 events to win the team title.Javelin throwers hit two provisional NCAA marks in the meet. Sam Taylor won the event with a throw of 43.89 meters. That mark is the eighth best in NCAA Division II this season.Lexi Arnold was second with a toss of 41.36 meters.The SRU men also won the invitational, winning 13 of the 17 events.Slippery Rock High graduate Ethan Geisler was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.24 seconds.

Women’s LacrossePaige Constantino scored two goals to lead The Rock in a 21-4 loss to second-ranked West Chester University.The Rock fell to 4-7 overall and 1-6 in the PSAC. West Chester, meanwhile, improved to 10-1 overall and remained perfect in the league at 7-0.
