Bresnahan weighing options

PITTSBURGH — Olivia Bresnahan is “still weighing options” after Duquesne University women’s basketball coach Suzie McConnell-Serio left Friday for the University of Pittsburgh.

Bresnahan, a 2010 Butler graduate and girls basketball standout with the Golden Tornado, transferred to Duquesne after playing two seasons at Florida State.

“She was a big reason why I came here,” the 5-foot-11 guard said of McConnell-Serio. “I was looking forward to playing for her.

“The team was shocked when she told us she was leaving. This was totally unexpected.”

Bresnahan attended a camp run by McConnell-Serio, who was the first collegiate coach to offer her a scholarship. That occurred during Bresnahan’s sophomore year at Butler.

McConnell-Serio was 123-68 in six years at Duquesne, including a school-record 24 wins this past season. The Dukes finished 24-8, 11-3 in the Atlantic 10. The 11 conference wins marked a school record as well.

Bresnahan enrolled at Duquesne in January and has been practicing with the team since.

“This is a good career move for Coach Serio and we understand her leaving,” she said. “It’s a chance to coach in the ACC. We’re happy for her.”

Duquesne athletic director Greg Amodio said Friday that a national coaching search would begin immediately.

“I’m not sure what I’m doing at this point,” Bresnahan said. “I’ll wait to see who the new coach is and consider my options then.”

Bresnahan has two years of basketball eligibility remaining. She averaged 2.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in 60 games at Florida State before sitting out this past season under NCAA Division I transfer rules.
