Butler graduates and brothers Ryan and Mick Fennell earned victories while pitching for their respective college teams Saturday.
Ryan, a junior at LaRoche College, tossed an 8-0 shutout against Hilbert, striking out four and scattering five hits. He is 4-0 with a 1.40 earned run average this season. LaRoche is 17-4.
Mick, a freshman at California (Pa.) University, allowed only an unearned run in a 4-1 win over Clarion. He struck out seven and scattered six hits. Mick is 4-1 with a 1.11 ERA and the Vulcans are 20-7 on the year.
CENTER TWP — Three figure skaters from Butler earned medals during the recent Shamrock Skate at Neville Island and Golden Blades Championships at Delmont.Christian DePolo, 9, and Stefani Hartman, 8 — both Center Township Elementary students — won gold medals in pairs skating. DePolo also won a silver in spotlight and freestyle, a bronze in spotlight. Hartman won a gold and a bronze in spotlight.Danielle DePolo, 13, a Butler Junior High student, won a bronze in freestyle.All three skaters are coached by Marty Culbertson.
NEVILLE ISLAND — Three Butler County hockey players — Tanner Gilliland of Butler, Brandon Zack and Cole Hepler of Freeport — will be participating in the America's Hockey Showcase this week at the RMU Island Sports Center.There are 20 boys teams and six girls teams competing in the Wednesday through Saturday event. Gilliland, Zack and Hepler will play for Team Pittsburgh.Team Pittsburgh plays New York at 5 p.m. Wednesday, New England at 3 p.m. Thursday, Midwest at 3 p.m. Friday.
CLARION — A-C Valley seniors Brody Irwin and Ryan Bartley scored 16 and 10 points, respectively, for the White squad in a 103-93 loss to the Red in the 13th annual Clarion County YMCA Boys All-Star Basketball Game recently at Clarion High School.
The Butler BlueSox have added two pitchers to their 2013 roster.Radford University left-hander Tyler Swarmer, a Leechburg resident, was selected to the American Legion All-State team. He has a freshman at Radford this spring.Jodan Deal is a 6-foot-4 right-bander from Belmont University in Tennessee. He received all-county honors in high school.
