Mary J. Spohn, 93, of Butler died Saturday afternoon at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Jan. 16, 1920, in Butler, and was a daughter of the late Nikolai Benchuk and Mary (Utoski) Benchuk Kewick, and also her stepfather, Nick Kewick, who mostly raised her.

Mary worked as a clerk for Miller's Shoes in Butler, retiring after 36 years in 1988. Before that, she worked at Offut's Department Store on Main Street in Butler.

She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Butler, was a charter and life member of the South Butler VFD auxiliary, was a life member of the Tanglewood Senior Center and also the AARP. Mary was an avid bowler and card player, had enjoyed flower gardening, and had been a second mother to her nieces and nephews, also a second grandmother to her great-nieces and great-nephews.

Surviving are her nieces, Nancy (Joseph) Scuro and Linda (Larry) Rottman, all of Butler; her nephews, Fred (Nora) Spohn and John (Linda) Spohn, all of Butler; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Spohn, who died June 30, 1969; and her sister, Helen Spohn.

SPOHN — Friends of Mary J. Spohn, who died Saturday Feb. 23, 2013, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave., Butler. Interment will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Herman.The Bereavement Committee of the St. Michael's Parish will meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home for a vigil service.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
