The Same Page Parenting Ministry will hold a five-session program to educate parents on cyber dangers.

The SPPM began as a result of a presentation by Katie Koestner that was sponsored by the JAL Youth Group and St. Fidelis Church, 125 Buttercup Road.

“It was a fantastic presentation but left questions about the dangers of technology,” said Stu Surkosky, one parent present at the talk.

Surkosky said there were a lot of questions raised at the presentation, so he decided to find answers.

The result is the SPPM. The group will meet once a month for five months, starting Sunday.

The meetings will be either at St. Fidelis Church or at Butler Catholic School, 515 E. Locust St., depending on the month.

The sessions will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on the designated Sunday, and baby-sitting will be provided.

The program was developed to give parents and caregivers a better understanding of technology and how to safeguard their children from predators on the internet.

“When your kids know more about technology than you, how do you handle it?” Surkosky asked.

The program will demonstrate what precautions should be taken with electronic devices.

The program will cover computers, cell phones, ipods and gaming devices, along with other electronic devices.

The sessions will have people such as police officers demonstrating the best way to protect against cyber dangers.

“There will be quite a bit of outside sources and bringing people in who specialize in those areas,” Surkosky said.

Part of the program will be used to help parents decide what the proper guidelines for their children might be.

“We will develop a survey to help parents develop a way to set guidelines and curfews,” Surkosky said.

SPPM members hope to help parents develop the skills they need to keep their children protected.
