William R. Hollingshad

William Hollingshad

William R. Hollingshad, 83, of Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople, formerly of Bradford Woods and Bethel Park, died Wednesday morning at UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless Township.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 25, 1929, he was the son of the late Guy and Opal Flynn Hollingshad.

Bill was a chemist for the Calgon/Merck Corp. He was a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.

He attended the Gibsonia Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. An avid reader, Bill was also a local library volunteer.

He served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves for 30 years. He was a private pilot who flew Cessna airplanes, and he was an avid woodworker.

Surviving are his daughter, Helen Hollingshad of Collegeville, Pa.; his son, Nicholas Hollingshad and his wife, Linda, of Clinton, S.C.; his grandchildren, Arlough and Alex Hollingshad; a sister, Frances Berg and her husband, Lowell, of Franklin, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Lois Sahli of Zelienople; three sisters-in-law, Joan Black in Maryland, and Julia McCurdy and Linda Van Dyke, both of Cranberry Township; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Pohtos Hollingshad, who he married on Dec. 26, 1953, and who died on Jan. 14, 1988; his second wife, Sandra L. Sahli Hollingshad, who he married on May 20, 1989, and who died on March 27, 2011; a brother, John Hollingshad; and a sister, Norma Gieringer.

HOLLINGSHAD — Friends of William R. Hollingshad, who died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, will be received at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave. Mars, from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Darcy Hawk, pastor of the Gibsonia Presbyterian Church, officiating.
