Matthew S. Gogolin, 80, of Valencia died Thursday afternoon at UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless Township.

Born in Pittsburgh on Jan. 9, 1933, he was the son of the late Matthew and Wanda Gogolin.

He had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He had been a member of the Bakerstown American Legion Post 548.

Matt was a retired bricklayer for Kussler Masonry in Carnegie. He was a past president of the Associated Trade and Craft Union.

Active in the community and raising five children, he had coached Little League, he had been the mayor of Valencia for 12 years and was a life member and former fire chief of the Valencia Volunteer Fire Department. He had organized a grass-roots effort to restore the Valencia Community Park and chaired the 100th anniversary celebration for the borough.

Matt was a member of St. Kilian Roman Catholic Church in Mars and had served on the parish council.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores “Dee” Zupancic Gogolin, who he married on June 1, 1954, and who died on May 7, 2005.

Surviving are three daughters, Kris Frisbee and her husband, Ben, Lynn Neese and Michele Gow and her husband, Floyd, all of Valencia; two sons, Matthew J. Gogolin and his wife, Freda, of Middlesex Township and Mark Gogolin and his wife, Carlene, in North Carolina; two sisters, Patricia and Theresa in Virginia; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his companion, Helen Ostrander.

Gogolin, who died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, will be received at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.A Mass of Christian burial will be in St. Kilian Church, at the corner of Clark and Cherry streets in Mars, at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev.
